Abstract

Objective: It was aimed to examine the compassion level of nurses and nursing department students. In addition, the relationship between the compassion levels of nurses and nursing students and their sociodemographic and working characteristics is revealed.

Method: This cross-sectional study was implemented in a public hospital and a university providing undergraduate nursing education in Istanbul. The “Compassion Scale” and a questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic data were used as data collection tools. Data were collected through an online questionnaire from 165 nurses and 105 students who volunteered to participate in the study. Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis tests were used in the analyses. Statistical significance was accepted as p<0.05.

Results: There is a significant difference between the compassion level of nursing students and nurses; students have a higher level of compassion. Among the nurses, compassion level is higher for older, married, female, have no children, and have a longer total working time. There is a difference in the sub-dimensions of disconnection and dismissal based on the class of education of nursing students.

Conclucions: It is seen the level of compassion is high as the pre-professional and professional working years progress, but it is low in the first years of stepping into the profession. For this reason, studies to increase the level of compassion in new nurses are recommended. Nurses should be supported on issues such as; empathy, communication, and coping with difficult patients. And the concept of compassion should be addressed in human resources practices in hospitals.
