Abstract

Aim: This study aims to determine the relationship between nutritional supplement use, nutritional knowledge and cyberchondria level in parents with children aged between 5-18 years.

Method: The descriptive study consisted of 229 parents. Data was collected using Nutrition Knowledge Level Scale for for Adults (NKLSA), Cyberchondria Severity Scale (SCS) and information form.

Results: Research findings revealed that 24% of mothers and 62% of their children used nutritional supplements. 81% of mothers used nutritional supplements for their children stated that the nutritional supplements they used for their children were safe. 45.7% of mothers stated that they used nutritional supplements to support their children's growth, and 30.3% stated that they started using more nutritional supplements for their children during the Covid-19 pandemic. The mean score on the Food Preference Knowledge subscale was found to be significantly lower, and the mean score on the Distrust of Doctors subscale was significantly higher compared to mothers who did not use nutritional supplements for their children (p<0.05). A negative significant relationship was found between the parents' mean Basic Nutrition Knowledge score and the Cyberchondria Severity Scale total score, compulsion subscale and excessive anxiety subscale score. A negative significant relationship was detected between the Distrust in Doctor subscale and the mean score of the Food Preference Knowledge. A negative significant relationship was found between the mean NKLSA score and the Excessive Anxiety subscale score (p<0.05).

Conclusion: The findings showed that cyberchondria, compulsion and excessive anxiety levels decrease in line with the increase in mothers' basic nutritional knowledge. It was determined that the mother's nutritional knowledge level was negatively associated with excessive anxiety. It has seen that mothers who used nutritional supplements for their children had lower nutritional preference knowledge and higher distrust of physician. Educating mothers about healthy nutrition and healthy food choices has been recommended to raise awareness about misinformation on the internet regarding healthy nutrition and health protection.
