Abstract

Aim: In this study, we aimed to investigate the change in vitamin B12 levels at the end of 6-month follow-up in patients who were diagnosed with type 2 DM after applying to the outpatient clinic of Kafkas University and were started on metformin treatment.

Materials and Methods: 101 patients who applied to Kafkas University Health Research and Application Hospital Family Medicine and Internal Diseases Polyclinics between 01.06.2019-01.06.2020 (1 year period) and were diagnosed with type 2 DM as a result of anamnesis, physical examination and blood tests and started metformin as treatment, were included in the study. was included.

Results: Of the patients included in the study, 63 (62.4%) were female and 38 (37.6%) were male. These patients were followed up for a period of 6 months, and vitamin B12 and other requested tests (laboratory tests) were evaluated in the study.

Conclusion: In our study on patients who were started on metformin considering type 2 DM, we found that there was a statistically significant decrease in vitamin B12 levels in the 6-month follow-up period. Based on our study, we state that vitamin B12 levels should be monitored in patients with type 2 DM who were started on metformin therapy, and we emphasize the necessity of prompt replacement in patients with vitamin B12 deficiency.
