Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between mental problems and diabetes self-management in individuals with diabetes.
Methods: This study is a descriptive study. Data were collected from 320 individuals with diabetes by face-to-face questionnaire. As data collection tools; personal data identification form, Perception of Self-Management in Diabetes Scale and Patient Health Questionnaire were used. Data were analyzed with SPSS 26.0 statistical program.
Results: In this study, the Diabetes Self-Management Perception Scale score of individuals with diabetes was 30.69±2.65 and the Patient Health Questionnaire score was 5.83±3.11. The Diabetes Self-Management Perception Scale score of those who received diabetes education was higher and the Patient Health Questionnaire score was lower than those who did not (p<0.05).
Conclusion: As a result, in order to control diabetes and prevent diabetes complications, individuals should have good diabetes self-management and therefore diabetes self-management perception should be high. In this study, no significant relationship was found between depression and diabetes self-management perception (p>0.05). However, it is seen from literature studies that there may be a negative relationship between these two parameters. If there is depression in individuals with diabetes, diabetes self-management will fail. In order for diabetes self-management perception, which is important for diabetes self-management, to be high, the presence and level of depression in individuals with diabetes should be determined. It is recommended that diabetes education, which has a positive effect on diabetes self-management perception and depression, should be given to individuals with diabetes and repeated periodically.
