ADAPTATION TO MEDICATION IN CHRONİC DISEASES: COVID-19 PANDEMIC AND GENDER

Background: This study was designed to determine the effect of gender and pandemic process on drug compliance in patients who need to use warfarin as a regular blood thinner drug in parallel with a cardiovascular cause in the COVID-19 pandemic, which is a global epidemic.
Material-Method: The study, which was designed as a cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational study, was conducted in the INR outpatient clinic of a tertiary hospital in Istanbul between July and October 2020. The data of the study performed on 354 patients who met the study criteria and volunteered to participate in the study; Data were collected using a descriptive information form and the Drug Adherence and Prescribing Scale (IURYÖ). NCSS (Number Cruncher Statistical System) 2007 (Kaysville, Utah, USA) program was used to evaluate the data.
Results: of the 354 cases, 57.3% (n=203) were female, and the mean age was 65±11.34 years. The subscale scores of the “Drug Intake” subscale of the Drug Compliance and Prescription Scale of the cases were between 1 and 2, and the average was 1.09±0.17. The scores of the” Drug Printing" sub-dimension are between 1.3 and 2.3, and the average is 1.88±0.18. It has been found that the educational status and working status of female cases are significantly lower than men's, and also the number of emergency room admissions and hospitalization rate are statistically significant in women due to problems related to the use of warfarin (p=0.049; p= 0.023, p<0.05).
Conclusion: It has been observed that the pandemic reduces the rate of going to the hospital due to the fear of infection in heart diseases, which are chronic diseases, and increases the number of drug-induced emergency admissions and hospitalizations in female cases.
