Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted to examine the prejudices of nurses towards obese patients and the factors affecting it.

Materials and Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 179 nurses caring for obese patients in a training and research hospital. Data were collected using the Nurse Identification Form and the GAMS-27 Obesity Bias Scale created by the researchers. SPSS 26.0 statistical package program was used in the analysis of the data.

Results: The mean score of the nurses from the GAMS-27 Obesity Bias Scale was 87.24±12.30 and the Cronbach alpha value was 0.812. It was determined that the mean age of the nurses participating in the study was 33.47±7.07, 69.2% were female and 59.2% were normal weight. In addition, it was determined that 77.6% of them did not receive training on caring for obese patients, 63.1% gave care to obese patients and 57.5% were satisfied with providing care to obese patients. It was determined that the gender, body mass index, education status of the nurses about caring for the obese patient and the status of caring for the obese patient did not affect the obesity bias (p>0.05). It was determined that nurses who were not satisfied with caring for obese patients were more biased towards obese patients (p=0.004).

Conclusion: It was determined that the nurses participating in the study were biased about giving care to obese patients and those who were not satisfied with giving care to obese patients were more biased
