Self-Efficacy-Competence Levels and Perceived Social Support Levels of Students during the Covid-19 Pandemic: A University Example

Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between university students' self-efficacy-competence levels and their perceived social support levels.

Materials and Methods: The present study’s data were collected from associate degree students studying at a university in March-April 2022. A total of 225 students participated in the study. The data of the research were collected from students with a questionnaire form about the sociodemographic characteristics of the students, the Self-Efficacy-Competence Scale and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support prepared by the researchers in the light of the literature. Number, percentage, frequency distributions, one-way anova, t-test and correlation analyses were used in the analysis of the research data.

Results: 70.2% of the students participating in the study were female, and 35.2% were students studying at the first and emergency program. In our study, it was determined that the students' self-efficacy-competence scale mean score was 74.09±9.98, and their perceived social support scale total score was 54.47±20.64. A statistically significant difference was found between the maternal attitudes perceived by the students from their demographic characteristics and their self-efficacy-competence levels. Furhermore, A statistically significant difference was observed between the students' perceived father attitudes and their perceived social support scale scores (p<0.005).

Conclusion: It was determined that there was a statistically positive and weak relationship between the students' self-efficacy-competence scale and perceived social support scale scores. To increase students' self-efficacy-competence levels and perceptions of social support during the pandemic, they can be included in appropriate education programs that improve health and gain positive behaviors, and various activities can be organized to increase their social relations.
