Abstract

Nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy is one of the most common symptoms in pediatric oncology patients, which negatively affects their quality of life. Acupressure, which is accepted as a non-pharmacological method, takes its roots from traditional Chinese medicine and has a history of 5000 years, is a treatment used in many parts of the world. Although the mechanism of action of acupressure on nausea and vomiting has not been fully clarified, it can be based on some theories. According to these theories, it is thought that acupressure relieves nausea and vomiting by increasing the release of neurohormones and neurotransmitters (serotonin, beta endorphin, histamine) and changing the regulation of blood circulation after acupressure stimulation when applied. Acupressure, which is used to alleviate chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in children, is an easily accessible and applicable, safe and economical method that increases independent nursing function. Prevention of nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy in children; it ensures that the maintenance of fluid-electrolyte balance and nutritional pattern, as well as the integrity of the mucous membrane in the oral cavity. And also; it increases the quality of life of the child and his family, adaptation to treatment and motivation. In this respect, pediatric nurses should follow the current guidelines developed for children receiving chemotherapy in order to ensure optimal management of nausea and vomiting, and apply antiemetics requested according to the emetogenic level of the chemotherapy protocol. In addition, they should periodically evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment that they are applying.
