Abstract

ABSTRACT Aim: Vitamin B12 deficiency has been reported in patients with autoimmune thyroid disorders. However, there are a limited number of studies investigating the relationship between anti-thyroperoxidase antibody (anti-TPO, A-TPO) and Vit-B12. With autoimmun thyroid disorder (AITD), diabetes mellitus (DM) is also common in some patients. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between autoimmune thyroiditis and Vit-B12 and diabetes mellitus. Methods: Test data (Anti-TPO, Anti-TG, TSH, FT4, Vit-B12, FBS(fasting blood glucose),TCS(postprandial blood glucose) and HbA1C) of 291 patients who 250 women and 41 men, who applied to our laboratory between July 2019and December 2019, were retrospectively analyzed. UniCel DxI 800 (Beckman Coulter Diagnostics, USA) immunoassay device was used for anti-TPO, Anti-TG, TSH, FT4 and Vit-B12 test analysis. FBS(Fasting blood glucose) and TCS (postprandial blood glucose) levels were analyzed in the AU-2700 (Beckman Coulter Diagnostics, USA)autoanalysis device.HbA1c(glycated haemoglobin) tests were performed in Variant 2 device (Bio-Rad Laboratories, Singapore) by HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography with quantitative ion exchange) test method. Results: The rate of patients in the group of patients with Vit-B12 deficiency (Vit-B12 <200 pg / ml) is 41.5%, and the rate of patients in the group of patients with normal Vit-B12 level (Vit-B12> 200 pg / ml) is approximately 58.5%. No statistically significant correlation was found between anti-TPO and Vit-B12 levels (P> 0.05). Conclusion: Vit-B12 deficiency in autoimmune thyroiditis (AITD) did not depend on the patient's age, gender, and anti-TPO levels. In women patients with diabetes mellitus and autoimmune thyroiditis, a significant correlation was found between elevated TCS (postprandial blood glucose) and HbA1c levels and Vit-B12 deficiency (P <0.05).
