Abstract

Aim:  In this study, it was aimed to determine the beliefs and practices of final year nursing students concerning hand hygiene.

Method:  This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 240 nursing students. The population of the research consisted of a total of 301 students studying in the last year of nursing at a university in Aydın in the academic year of 2020-2021. Sample selection was not made in the study, and 240 nursing students who agreed to participate in the study by reaching the entire universe were included in the sample. The participation rate of the students in the research is 79.8%.  The power of the study was found to be 1-β=0.88. Data were collected with Descriptive Information Form, Hand Hygiene Belief Scale Hand and Hygiene Practice Inventory.  In the study, descriptive statistics are shown with frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean and standard deviation. Pearson Correliation test was used to compare the Hand Hygiene Belief Scale and Hand Hygiene Practice Inventory scores.Data obtained in the study was evaluated in the SPSS 21.0 program and in the electronic environment.

Results:  It was determined that the average Hand Hygiene Belief Scale score was 87.29±13.34 and the average Hand Hygiene Practice Inventory score was 64.96±9.09. The hand hygiene belief scale scores of nursing students differed significantly in terms of gender and school success (respectively p=0.041; p=0.001). In a similar vein, it was determined that the mean scores of the students’ Hand Hygiene Practice Inventory showed a significant difference regarding gender, school success and education level of mother (respectively p=0.032; p=0.001; p=0.001). It was identified that there is a positive medium level correlation between the hand hygiene belief and practice inventory scores of students (r= 0.493; p<0.001).

Conclusion:  It was found that the students' beliefs and practices towards hand hygiene were generally positive, their hand hygiene practices were insufficient before touching the patient, and the belief in taking the behavior of healthcare professionals as an example was low. In line with the results of the research, it can be suggested that the beliefs and practices of nursing students regarding hand hygiene should be evaluated with more comprehensive studies and educational studies should be conducted on the subject.
