Abstract

Aim: The research was conducted to determine the level of knowledge of emergency room nurses about elder abuse and their approaches to this issue.

Method: The data of this descriptive study were collected between November 2020 and January 2021. Nurses who are members of the Emergency Nurses Association's social media account (N: 1200) and 137 nurses who meet the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The data were collected on the internet with a questionnaire form prepared by the researchers in line with the literature.

Results: In the study, the rate of nurses who reported that they encountered elder abuse cases was 27%, and the rate of those who reported the abuse they detected was 19.7%. It was determined that 84.6% of the nurses did not have knowledge about the legal regulations for elder abuse. 65.7% of the emergency room nurses stated that they did not consider themselves sufficient in determining elder abuse, and 28.4% in providing care to an abused elder. It was revealed that 73.7% of the nurses did not receive training on elder abuse, and their knowledge of risk factors for elder abuse and common physical and behavioral symptoms of abuse was at a moderate level. 49.6% of the emergency nurses stated that reporting elder abuse cases was not only the responsibility of the physician, while 70.1% stated that all health personnel were responsible for reporting elder abuse. 46.7% of the emergency room nurses did not have knowledge about the procedures applied in the clinic in cases of elder abuse, 48.1% said that the abuse report could be made without the consent of the elder, 40.8% stated that the identity information of the relevant employee would be kept confidential in case of abuse reporting and 64.2% of them stated that they did not know about the legal sanction of not reporting abuse cases.

Conclusion: In the study, it was determined that the emergency room nurses did not have sufficient knowledge about elder abuse and had inappropriate approaches. Emergency services are the areas where elder abuse cases are seen most frequently and these problems can be overlooked due to their rapid functioning, and it is necessary for nurses working in these units to keep their knowledge and awareness of abuse constantly active.
