Vitamin D level in dementia patients

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine vitamin D levels in dementia patients and to investigate their possible effects. Material and Method: Between July 2019 - March 2020, Sivas Numune Hospital Neurology outpatient clinic evaluated by the researcher and MMT (Mini Mental Status Examination) score was lower than 24, with ages between 58 and 89 patients (24 men, 25 women) aged 52 Serum vitamin D levels of 49 control groups (17 males, 32 females between 87 and 87) were compared retrospectively. Vitamin D deficiency was accepted as < 20 ng / mL. Results: The findings were evaluated with independent t test. The mean vitamin D levels and standard deviations of the groups were taken. Vitamin D levels in the dementia group were 16.21 ± 13.10 ng / mL and the control group was 21.11 ± 12.84 ng / mL. The low level of vitamin D was statistically significant in the patient group (p < 0.016). Conclusion: Vitamin D level was significantly lower in dementia patients. This result obtained from our study; It supports studies that emphasize that vitamin D levels may be low in patients with cognitive dysfunction. In parallel, we believe that supplemental treatment of vitamin D is necessary when necessary.
