Introduction/Backround: The high prevalence of depression and anxiety in patients with total knee arthroplasty (TKA) can be explained by the chronic pain they’re exposed to and perceived disease factors. The determination of perceptual factors related to anxiety and depression underlying disease is important for effective management of treatment and rehabilitation process. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate ilness perception, hospital depression and anxiety inpatients with TKA due to knee osteoarthritis. Method: A general evaluation form including demographic information, hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) and İllness perception questionnaire (İPQ-R) was completed in the face-to-face interview of 10 patients during the hospital stay(6-8 days) in the orthopedic ward after TKA operation. Findings: With a mean age of 62 years (± 9.11), 10 participants mean body mass index was 33.68 kg/m² (± 4.80). Anxiety was found in 40% of patients, depression in 60%, limit and above. Result: As a result of our study, the significant relationship between İPQ-R and HADS; suggests that İPQ-R which Turkish version’s used in onkology and internal disease patients, may be used in the physiotherapy professions. How patients perceive their illnesses during physiotherapy and rehabilitation process is important in terms of its effect on treatment success.
