Abstract

Objective: The aim of this review is to emphasize the critical importance of zoos and wildlife parks in social life and to evaluate their roles in animal conservation, education, research, and recreation. In addition, the study highlights the significance of these facilities in protecting endangered species and supporting their rehabilitation and reintroduction into natural habitats.

Materials and Methods: This study was conducted based on a comprehensive literature review and interviews with selected wildlife parks operating in accordance with internationally accepted standards. Relevant scientific publications and reports concerning zoos, wildlife conservation, and animal welfare were examined to assess the functions and contributions of these institutions.

Results: Technological development and industrialization have led to a continuous reduction in green areas worldwide, resulting in habitat loss and increasing extinction risks for many animal species. Zoos and wildlife parks provide suitable environments for the protection, care, and feeding of endangered or injured animals while attempting to replicate natural habitats. These institutions fulfill four interconnected functions: research, conservation, education, and recreation. Furthermore, they enable people to observe species that they would not normally encounter in everyday life, thereby strengthening the human–animal relationship and increasing public awareness regarding biodiversity and environmental conservation.

Conclusion: Zoos and wildlife parks are indispensable institutions for the preservation of biodiversity and the welfare of endangered species when established and managed under appropriate conditions with animal welfare as a primary consideration. Besides contributing to scientific research and environmental education, these facilities play a crucial role in the care, rehabilitation, and potential reintroduction of threatened animals into the wild. Therefore, properly managed zoos and wildlife parks constitute an essential component of modern wildlife conservation strategies.
