Abstract

INVESTIGATION OF LEVELS OF SERUM PENTRAXIN-3 AND C-REACTIVE PROTEIN THAT ARE ACUTE PHASE REACTANTS IN SICKLE CELL ANEMIA
Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is one of the most common hemoglobinopathies in the world, and infections are between the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in patients. Therefore, in this study, it was aimed to determine the levels of Pentraxin-3 and C-reactive proteins, which are members of the pentraxin family, which are increased in inflammatory and ischemic conditions in patients with SCA. A total of 89 individuals, 44 patients (23-40 years old) with SCA and 45 healthy individuals (21-48 years) were included in the study. CRP was analyzed in Cobas Integra 800 device by immunoturbidimetric method and PTX3 was measured by ELISA method. CRP and PTX3 levels were found to be increased in SCA patients compared to healthy individuals (p <0.001). No significant correlation was found between the PTX3 and CRP levels of patients with SCA and the control group (r = -0.188, p = 0.22, r = -0.117, p = 0.445, respectively). We think that increased PTX3 and CRP levels can be used in the diagnosis of SCA in many inflammatory diseases.
